Utilizing the Adobe Reader Search Facility with the UltraQuest & NOMAD Online Library

The UltraQuest and NOMAD Online Library CD contains the current versions of all of the documentation available to UltraQuest and NOMAD users. If you have an older printed document, you should use the online version, as it may contain revised, more accurate text. To utilize the Adobe Reader Search facility, the Online Library contains an internal index of every word in every PDF on the CD.

Reader’s Search facility is quite powerful and yet may be overwhelming, especially when you search for a word or phrase and get hundreds of hits!

Note that the use of the Search facility described below may differ slightly, depending on your version of the Reader. You can always choose Help>Adobe Reader Help and review the section on Searching text.

The following information will help limit the number of hits to just the document or documents you want to search.

Searching in a PDF

To search for a word or phrase in one PDF, you have two options:

1. Open the document (PDF) and press Ctrl + F.
- Enter the search word or phrase in the Find box.
- The Find option starts at the beginning of the document, or at your current location, and finds the next occurrence of the phrase.
- You must click the Next icon to advance to the next occurrence.

2. Open the document and choose Edit>Search or click the Search icon (binoculars) on the tool bar.
- Select the In the current PDF document option.
- In the Search PDF window, enter the search word or phrase, and click the Search button.
- A list of all occurrences of the phrase appears, from which you can select one to view.

Searching a document composed of multiple PDFs

You may have noticed that some of the larger documents, such as the Reference Manual, are composed of several chapters, with each chapter being a separate PDF. You may want to search for a string in one of these documents without searching all the PDF files on the CD.

First, you should know that each PDF has been given a title. This is the title that appears in the search results box when the PDF contains the search criteria.

The following documents, which consist of multiple PDFs, contain a common string in their titles:

UltraQuest and NOMAD Reference Manual: Reference Manual

UltraQuest and NOMAD DB2 for z/OS Interface: DB2 for z/OS Interface

UltraQuest and NOMAD DB2 for z/VM Interface: DB2 for z/VM Interface

UltraQuest and NOMAD Session Manager Guide: Session Manager

UltraQuest Administrators Guide - z/OS: UQ Administrators Guide z/OS

UltraQuest Configuration Guide - z/OS: UQ Configuration Guide z/OS

UltraQuest Administrators Guide - z/VM: UQ Administrators Guide z/VM

UltraQuest Configuration Guide - z/VM: UQ Configuration Guide z/VM

(To see the title of a PDF, open it and press Ctrl + D. Select the Description tab and look at the Title field.)

Using the common title string in your search criteria allows you to search just the PDFs for the document.

Note that following explanation may vary depending on your version of the Adobe Reader.

The following example explains how to search for a phrase in just the Reference Manual.

1. From the UltraQuest and NOMAD Welcome menu, choose Edit>Search or click the Search icon on the tool bar. The Search PDF windows opens.

2. At the bottom, select Use Advanced Search Options.

3. In the new panel, leave the Look In field set to N2753CD.PDX (or the current index).

4. Type the word/phrase you are searching for.

5. In the middle section, Use these additional criteria, do the following:
- In the first field, select Title.
- In the second field select Contains.
- In the third field (below the first two) type Reference Manual.

6. Click the Search button.

7. You will see all of the occurrences of the word/phrase in the Reference Manual chapters only (and maybe the Collection Reference Manual as its title contains Reference Manual also).

Reader Search versus Document Index

Traditionally, we're used to working with hard-copy documentation where there is an index at the back of a book which helps you find the relevant chapter or page. Sometimes book indexes can be helpful, but they are only as good as the keywords the author considers are likely to be relevant to the reader. Electronic documentation has the power to help you easily find the reference you are looking for because every word or phrase is available for searching. So you can search on a word or phrase that is meaningful to you and without needing to know which book or chapter the information is in.

Don’t be afraid to use the Search facility. It really is simple to use. Experiment with the advanced search features, and you’ll get even closer hits of what you are searching for.

Call UltraQuest and NOMAD Customer Support if you have questions or if you have suggestions for improving the Online Library.
