Select’s UltraQuest™ Adds Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server Access from z/VM
Trumbull, CT January 6, 2009:
Select Business Solutions™, an Avantcé Software company, and a leading provider of mainframe reporting and data access tools, announced today the release of its JDBC interfaces to Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server from the z/VM environment.
According to Roger Cox, Sr. Product Marketing Manager, “These UltraQuest JDBC Interfaces are powerful tools for unlocking the information that is held in Oracle and SQL Server databases. The interfaces deliver the security and seamless access for the productive use of popular data for reporting and analysis.”
The UltraQuest server under z/VM provides access to Oracle and SQL Server data residing on mid-tier platforms while the UltraQuest Reporter provides dialogs including an innovative wizard that facilitates building, modifying, and executing reports. Report requests can then be published to the UltraQuest Library where they can be accessed by users through menus with just a web browser.
Users of UltraQuest Reporter or the UltraQuest Library can report from their Oracle and SQL Server data in the same manner that they would report from mainframe data sources. Since all reports are handled by the same UltraQuest server, they can easily join Oracle and SQL Server data with mainframe data from DB2, VSAM, NOMAD, IDMS and Teradata for more comprehensive reporting.
Report output can be delivered to the Web browser, to printers, to PC applications such as Microsoft Excel, via email, or held for redistribution at a later time. Reports can also be displayed as a PDF document, a web chart, as HTML or generated in XML format for use with other products. Dashboards are also available to provide an "at-a-glance" view of business information available in Oracle, SQL Server and other data sources.
UltraQuest includes a specialized mid-tier Java server dedicated to Oracle or SQL Server access for maximizing efficiency. In addition, UltraQuest which includes a mainframe-based application server, works through a Web server to provide the following services:
UltraQuest Reporter: for interactive, real-time access to reports and data extracts from mainframe and mid-tier data sources.
UltraQuest Library: a shared library of reports, published from UltraQuest Reporter, which are available through Web browser menus.
UltraQuest Applications: custom applications, built using the UltraQuest server and the underlying UltraQuest 4GL. These applications may involve reports as well as data queries and updates.
UltraQuest WebServices: provides Web services to access mainframe data sources enabling a seamless and efficient integration of legacy data with the next generation of business intelligence applications.
Pricing and Availability Select’s UltraQuest Oracle and SQL Server Interfaces for z/VM are available immediately with pricing available upon request.

Trumbull, CT January 6, 2009:
Select Business Solutions™, an Avantcé Software company, and a leading provider of mainframe reporting and data access tools, announced today a new product offering, the VM Database Extender, now available for use with NOMAD version 7.53 and UltraQuest version 5.0.
In Select’s tradition of enhancing our database support, we developed the VM Database Extender which allows z/VM sites with very large NOMAD BTREE databases to split them over multiple CMS minidisks with negligible changes to existing applications.
Currently, a number of NOMAD/UltraQuest customers have very large databases with BTREE masters that are close to exceeding the capacity of a CMS minidisk. The existing DBCONCAT command allows sites to split such databases over multiple minidisks, handle each file on a separate minidisk as a concatenated database extension, and issue reports against the concatenated database.
“The Database Extender on VM extends the functionality of the concatenated database feature so that it will support updating, positioning, and lookups, as with other NOMAD databases,” said Roger Cox, Sr. Product Marketing Manager. “With the Database Extender, existing databases can be converted to concatenated databases, while still allowing them to be used and maintained by existing applications.”
The VM Database Extender is ideal for those z/VM customers who have NOMAD databases that are reaching the size limitation of a CMS minidisk and need a quick, dependable solution with minimal coding changes while preserving performance.
NOMAD is the most functionally rich business intelligence reporting tool available today for delivering a full range of applications with easy access to a variety of data sources for reporting and analysis. NOMAD is a fully relational product, which provides the basis for its tight integration with and highly efficient use of other relational database engines such as DB2 for z/OS, DB2 for z/VM and Teradata, as well as support for IMS, VSAM and IDMS data sources.
UltraQuest, which includes a mainframe-based application server, works through a Web server to provide the following services:
Pricing and Availability Select’s VM Database Extender is available immediately with pricing available upon request.

Select Business Solutions, a leading provider of business intelligence tools, announces the latest release of its Web-based, business intelligence software, UltraQuest for Healthcare.
Trumbull, CT June 14, 2010 -- The world’s leading hospitals use the Business Intelligence capabilities of UltraQuest to make sense of their complex data. This newest release enables healthcare professionals to even further leverage their existing data and improve their reporting capabilities.
“The ability to quickly generate real time dashboards and scorecards for our executives was a major benefit of UltraQuest. They can now simply come into the office and see a graphical snapshot of their business instead of waiting for reports to be delivered. The paper saving’s alone was a huge cost savings”, General Manager of a major Healthcare Provider.
According to Roger Cox, Sr. Product Marketing Manager, “The latest enhancements to UltraQuest in version 5.50 builds on the solid functionality our users have enjoyed for the last 10 years. The dozens of hospitals we currently serve will be able to take advantage of new functionality as well as an updated user-interface that is even more intuitive and simple to use.”
A typical healthcare implementation uses UltraQuest to support thousands of end users for reporting and Business Intelligence, and publishes hundreds of reports in their UltraQuest Library. Once a report is written in the UltraQuest Reporter client, it can be published and run via a standard web browser from any location.
The simplicity of the interface allows even non-technical end users to build their own data extracts which they can modify at will. UltraQuest handles all the tasks that normally required the assistance of IT staff. Thus, the reporting staff is no longer subject to the priorities and calendar of the IT group. This is of significant value to the reporters, who are asked to provide information to dozens of customers regularly – often with very short notice.
“It used to take our staff weeks, or more, to build reports for our departmental users. Using UltraQuest we are now taking hours instead of weeks. This provides a significant savings in time and bandwidth for our business”, SVP of a Healthcare Provider.
A number of hospitals have already found that UltraQuest can unlock the true value of their IT investments.
Reports can also be scheduled to run automatically at any given frequency for any length of time, with the resulting output delivered to end users via a variety of formats, including PDF, Microsoft Excel ®, HTML, charts, and dashboards.

Select Releases UltraQuest for Banking
Select Business Solutions, a leading provider of business intelligence tools, announces the latest release of its Web-based, business intelligence software, UltraQuest for Banking.
Trumbull, CT August 26, 2010 --
Many of North America’s leading banks and credit unions use the Business Intelligence capabilities of UltraQuest to report from a variety of Fidelity National Information Services Systematics’ core banking applications. This newest UltraQuest release enables banking professionals to improve their reporting capabilities while analyzing client data existing in very complex data structures.
Many of these banking professionals are now able to join data from a number of applications to provide timely answers to important operations issues that were not possible with other reporting products previously. In addition, users have experienced an increase in productivity made possible by UltraQuest since it reduces the time it takes for daily reporting and support activities. Tasks that used to take hours can now be done with UltraQuest in just minutes.
A number of banks are looking forward to generating real time dashboards for their executives as they upgrade to the latest version of UltraQuest. Providing a graphical snapshot of their business and branch operations will be a real winner for their top management.
According to Roger Cox, Sr. Product Marketing Manager, “The latest enhancements to UltraQuest in version 5.50 builds on the solid functionality our users have enjoyed for the last several years. Numerous financial institutions we currently serve will be able to take advantage of new functionality as well as an updated user-interface that is even more intuitive and simpler to use.”
A typical banking implementation uses UltraQuest to support hundreds of end users for reporting and Business Intelligence, and publishes hundreds of reports in their UltraQuest Library. Once a report is written with the UltraQuest Reporter client, it can be published and executed from anywhere via a standard web browser.
The simplicity of the interface allows even non-technical end users to build their own report requests which they can modify at will. UltraQuest handles all the tasks that normally required the assistance of IT staff. The reporting staff can produce reports in an ad hoc manner or schedule to run their reports in batch after production data has been updated. The ability to run reports online is of significant value to the staff, who are often asked to quickly respond to report requests for their customers.
A number of banks have already found that UltraQuest has further leveraged their existing data and, in fact, the use of UltraQuest has become “mission critical” to many of the banks’ daily operations and to senior management reporting.

Select Releases UltraQuest Version 5.5
Select Business Solutions, a leading provider of mainframe reporting and data access tools, announces today a new release of its Web-based, business intelligence software, UltraQuest version 5.5.
Trumbull, CT December 3, 2010 -- Highlights of this new release are a new Reporter desktop environment and the sharing of report output with other users throughout an enterprise.
The newly re-designed Reporter desktop will feature three environments - Design, Publish, and Explore - allowing the user to toggle between them for designing reports, for publishing requests to a menu or dashboard, or for managing databases and requests. Each report or menu is opened in its own tab allowing users to work on multiple reports/menus simultaneously. In addition, the request structure tree view is conveniently displayed alongside the design wizard so one can view the components of an entire request and make simple report changes easily. All reports and menus that are left open when Reporter is shut down will be re-opened upon the next invocation allowing users to pick up just where they left off.
According to Roger Cox, Sr. Product Marketing Manager, “we expect this re-design to make the user interface more intuitive and allow the user to be more productive while working on multiple reports/menus simultaneously within a completely integrated environment.”
Also in this new release, Shared Report Output was implemented by enhancing UltraQuest Reporter and Library so that output from published or non-published requests can be shared with other groups of users. If a Reporter or Library user selects to run a request to held output, the user will have the option to pick from a list of user groups with whom he wishes to share the output.
Shared output groups need to be created for this sharing of report output. Sharing groups can be the same groups that are allowed to publish requests or view requests, or the library administrator can define new sharing groups for viewing other users’ held output, e.g. a sharing group for all users in the same department. Alerts are available to automatically notify recipients in the select groups when their shared output is available for viewing.
