Deliver mainframe data efficiently to the desktop
Seventy percent of all corporate data still resides in mainframe databases and
files. With end-user tools for query, reporting and on-line analysis
increasingly on the desktop, enterprises need to deliver this mainframe data to
the business user for both ad hoc decision making and application support.
| |
| |
What is needed is a tool that can: |
Find and access the data. |
Transform and manipulate it. |
Format it for target uses. |
Deliver it to where it is needed. |
RP/Server™ (Remote Processing Server) is the tool to meet those basic needs
with a high degree of performance and efficiency.
RP/Server is a middleware product that delivers VM and MVS host data to users'
desktops for printing or on-line analysis. RP/Server is designed for data
access, reporting and restructuring activities in which direct access to
mainframe data from the desktop is preferred because it would be costly and
impractical to maintain local copies of data. Maintaining local copies can be
infeasible due to such issues as security, the timeliness of the data, the
volume of detailed records, or the unpredictability of the search
criteria.
RP/Server transforms your mainframe into a powerful processing server to the
desktop for report creation or use with a wide variety of Windows™
products.
Whether it is accessing data from a mainframe data warehouse or directly from
the operational database, RP/Server is a solution that stands apart for its
ability to make the most effective use of your organization's mainframe,
workstation and communications resources.
Transparent Support for Graphical Reporting
RP/Server, designed for remote data access and processing, consists of mainframe
(server) and workstation (client) components that integrate directly with
Windows desktop products.
The server component, RP/Server, works on IBM mainframes running VM or MVS NOMAD
, our fourth-generation language (4GL). For those sites who do not have NOMAD, a
server component, RP/Enabler, provides the mainframe processing.
On the desktop, the RP/Server clients include Impromptu and PowerPlay,
DDE-compliant Windows applications such as PowerBuilder, 1-2-3, Access and
Excel; Executive NOMAD, an application builder for executive information
systems; and Front & Center™, our 4GL that provides WYSIWYG-style report
painting and graphical application building capabilities.
Transparent Communication
Communication between the client and server components is transparent to the
user and may be provided by TCP/IP or by any Windows HLLAPI emulator, including
Attachmate EXTRA!, IRMA, Eicon Access and Rumba, as well as by LAN
gateways.
Access to Legacy Data Across the Enterprise
RP/Server delivers true enterprise-wide access to your legacy data, including
DB2/MVS, DB2/VM, Teradata, IMS, IDMS, QSAM and VSAM files.

Desktop Users Benefits |
NOMAD's schema facility presents the desktop user
with a single, logical view of mainframe data that may span different tables, or
even, multiple, heterogeneous databases and file structures. |
Data from multiple sources can be combined in a
single request.
Sophisticated formatting, calculated fields and column aliases can be defined
through the schema and transparently made available to the user to provide a
more meaninful and easier-to-use representation of the data. |
NOMAD users with applications in place can use
existing data definitions, procedures and report requests. |

Designed For Efficiency
RP/Server implements a "fat server" design that allows the host to do
more than simple data access. Developers can use RP/Server's peer-to-peer,
distributed communications facilities to partition applications for
client/server migration or data warehousing projects so that processing takes
place on the most efficient platform.
| |
Actual processing specific to the particular
function being performed is shipped to the host. |
Joins, calculations, compression and report
formatting, for example, are performed on the mainframe, with only the answer
sets sent to the desktop. |
Communication costs and network traffic are
thereby greatly reduced. |
For custom applications, the application
developer can determine what processing is performed locally and what is handled
remotely. |
RP/Server also intelligently manages the routing of output to deliver
additional efficiency benefits.
| |
If a mainframe-processed report is destined for a
user's workstation, its output is staged so that only the first portion of the
report is initially sent. |
If the user decides not to view the remainder,
the transfer can be cancelled - again, reducing communications costs. |

In supporting the migration to client/server architectures and the
development of data warehouses, RP/Server represents one of several solutions
that Select Business Solutions provides to help organizations maximize the full
value of enterprise data.
