Advisory Notice for XP SP2
Advisory Note on Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SCF

After installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 you may encounter the following problems:

  1. SCF on Windows XP SP2 - MEM_BAD_POINTER

Applies to: SCF 5.0 and later on Windows XP SP2

After the installation of Windows XP SP2 you may see error dialogues from Smartheap containing the text MEM_BAD_POINTER.

These normally occur when Select Component Architect is closed, or during a document generation, when each diagram is output. These messages do not actually indicate that anything is wrong, and can be safely acknowledged and ignored. This has been reported to Microsoft as a problem with the XP SP2, but there is no solution at present.

To avoid the problem you can:

* not install XP SP2

* If you've installed SP2 and are seeing this problem, and if you don't need support for East Asian languages, right-to-left languages, etc, uncheck the box(es) in the Regional and Language Options applet and follow the instruction for uninstalling (a reboot may be required).

Further information about this problem is available at: http://www.microquill.com/kb/xpsp2.htm

  2. Select Models Neighborhood does not start after upgrade to Windows XP SP2

Applies to: Select Component Factory 5.0 and later
Applies to: Windows XP SP2 , Windows Server 2003

Problem:

Double clicking on the Select Models Neighborhood icon on the desktop does not invoke Select Models Neighborhood

Solution:

Open the registry using regedit, and locate the key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{1D9C9AE0-6A42-11d1-B897-0080C82BF6A4}\ShellFolder

delete or rename the value: WantsFORPARSING

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. We cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
